My musical tastes are unreasonably eclectic. A random sampling from my playlist could have everything from Sibelius and Bartok to Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly, Iron & Wine, The Beat, Jimi Hendrix - or maybe Seasick Steve, Nickel Creek, Chris Garrick, Ali Farka Toure and Bach. My writing reflects all of that - sometimes at the same time ... but it is very recognisably my own.
"A perfect fit." BBC
I’ve been very lucky: I have been asked to write endless music. It has all been performed and most of it has been recorded (and is loitering around on iTunes, waiting to make my fortune...).
"Cumulative excitement and sheer abandon." Gramophone
I have always played gypsy music, klezmer, celtic laments, bluegrass and who knows what - just for myself, because I couldn’t help it. I might not have been completely convinced that it was “real” music - I had a very classical training - but when I was asked to start writing stuff in that direction, it just flowed. And ... I loved doing it.
